166 years ago today, on January 18th, 1859 (December 15th, 1858 in the lunar calendar), American political scientist and educator Goodnow F.J. was born. Goodenough (1859 ~ 1939) was an American political scientist and educator. Born 18 January 1859 in Brooklyn, New York City, and died 15 November 1939 in Baltimore. He studied at Amherst College and Columbia University in the United States, Paris, France and Berlin, Germany. He began to teach at Columbia University from 1883 to 1914, and served as president of Johns Hopkins University from 1914 to 1929. He successively taught administrative law, history and political science. He was the main founder of the American Political Society and became the first president of the society in 1903. In 1900, he participated in the drafting of the New York City Charter. From 1911 to 1912, he served as a member of President W. H. Taft's Committee on Economy and Efficiency. In 1913, he went to Beijing as the legal adviser of the Chinese government. In 1915, he published On Republic and Monarchy, arguing that the republican system was not suitable for China and creating public opinion for Yuan Shikai's restoration. His works include Comparative Administrative Law, Politics and Administration, Municipal Government in the United States, Principles of American Administrative Law, etc. Goodenough's theory has a certain influence on post-war administration.
